Session 3 : Team Communication Effectiveness
Group Discussion and Effective Communication Process ..
How the group members have done the discussion ? Are there any implications of the way the discussion has happened ?
What are the implications of I - E, I- G, and G- E decision indices for group decision making process followed in case of Tower Building exercise?
Make the following TWO rankings :
Individual Ranking - This reflects the individuals competence and knowledge that one possesses
Group Ranking - This reflects the group competence and knowledge that could be developed. Certain communication processes went in to making this ranking. Outcome of the Group ranking is due to the communication processes and their effectiveness which is reflected.
Take EXPERT Ranking from the EXPERT
Expert Ranking - This reflects the universal truth which is available outside of the group and members knowledge .
It is possible for the members of the group to reach to the EXPERT ranking provided they engage in the desired communication processes .
Calculate the following metrics for the Group Discussion :
Individual minus Group Deviation - Take deviation between I - G for each of the factor ; Ignore the sign ( + or - ) of the deviation ; Sum up the deviation .. Max. theoretical score that can be .. for 10 factors is.. 50; for 9 factors is 40; for 8 factors is 32; for 7 factors is 24; 6 factor is 18 etc.

---------------------
What these metrics reveal ?
It is possible to JUDGE what all happened in the group discussion as RIGHT or WRONG with the help of the above metrics.
GUIDELINES :
1. If I - E is ZERO : It means you as a group member is EXPERT like and your ranking is expert ranking.
2. If I - E is MAXIMUM : It means you as a group member is miles away from the expert. Don't worry. You might be good company of the group and due to the group you might become best. let us wait !
----------------------
3. If G - E is ZERO : It means your group has done excellent job of reaching to the EXPERT like ranking. Congratulations for the group.
4. If G - E is MAXIMUM : Reverse of the above. Your group has blunder and it took to WRONG direction. This is because, there are group members ( including you might be one ! ) who made this happen .
----------------------
5. If G - I is ZERO : This tells about nature of interaction you had in the group. Your ranking is same to that of the group. Otherwise, it also means that you made all the group members to follow your ranking. This cannot happen by chance.. Your work would have been the reason for this !
6. If G - I is MAXIMUM : You were different from the group as a whole. You changed yourself as you became part of the group. It means you are sold to the group.
----------------------
What is the meaning for you of the following EIGHT situations ?
1 X 3 X 5 = ? If I-E, I-G, G-E are ZERO
… You are expert; and you could well communicate to your group members to arrive at the expert decision.
1 X 3 X 6 = ?
1 X 4 X 5 = ?
1 X 4 X 6 = ?
………
2 X 3 X 5 = ?
2 X 4 X 5 = ?
2 X 3 X 6 = ?
2 X 4 X 6 = ?
----------------------------------
I- E must be minimum - This indice means that as a individual who are expert. Lower indice reflects ones ideas, beliefs, arguments are much closer to the expert and you being the best. This otherwise means that individual whose I - E is minimum is the RIGHT person to be part of a group and lead the group to right decision through right communication.
But there some real questions that crop up here are :
- Is that a RIGHT person ( who is expert ) capable to guide and influence the group to take RIGHT decisions ?
- Is it that all experts automatically lead the groups to RIGHT decisions ?
- Is it that NOT SO EXPERTS ( whose I - E is much more ..) can also guide the group to RIGHT decisions ?
All these things can be understood by looking at the next TWO indices
G - E must be minimum: It means that group has made the decision(s) which are much more similar and closer to the expert. Again it will be wonderful if the group after so much of discussion and deliberations comes to such a RIGHT decision. This reflects the effective decision. The reason for this there are some group members who have used their communication skills for the outcome.
I - G must be minimum: This indice reflects how different and similar the individual's ideas, beliefs to that of the group as a whole. In case, I - G is minimum it means that individual's ideas are same to that of the group and its members . This otherwise means that group member who is riding and leading the group through his / her excellent communication skills. This situation cannot have happened random !

The pedagogy of teaching this subject is really amazing and unique. Makes learning more, practical fun and most importantly...useful.
